A zigzag pattern in the wall of the Old City of Jerusalem.
In the past, the stone squares served as a hiding place for archers while the spaces between the stone "teeth" allowed firing against the enemy. The use of this structure is known as far back as antiquity: in Egyptian and Assyrian fortifications battlement was used regularly and this element has appeared in most fortifications since. Since the Renaissance it used more as a decorative architectural element.
The 15th-century wall, built by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, is one of the most recognizable symbols of Jerusalem.
